Women in Construction: Meet Kathy Wright

Women in Construction (WIC) Week is all about recognizing the hard work, talent, and dedication of women in the industry. At SB Thomas, we take pride in uplifting the incredible women on our team who drive our success. Today, we’re shining a light on Kathy Wright, a Project Manager whose expertise, leadership, and problem-solving skills make an impact on every project she touches.

How did you get started in a career in construction?

I spent many years as an insurance adjuster handling homeowners, commercial, and farm claims for storm damage in the field. Through that experience, I developed a deep understanding of construction, construction materials, mitigation, and the importance of accurate inspections. Transitioning into project management at SB Thomas felt like a natural progression, allowing me to apply my knowledge in a new way while continuing to work in an industry I enjoy.

What is your role with SB Thomas?

I am a project manager, primarily responsible for writing inspection reports for commercial and residential properties. In addition to that, I played a key role in managing the process for a large housing inspection project both in the U.S. and overseas. My work requires a balance of independent problem-solving and collaboration with the team to ensure thorough and accurate assessments.

What do you like about working for SB Thomas (a woman-owned and operated company)?

I really appreciate the independent nature of my work while still having a strong team to collaborate with when needed. The company has a family-like atmosphere, which makes it an enjoyable place to work. Most importantly, I applaud SB Thomas for its commitment to integrity, something I value highly. It’s inspiring to be part of a company that not only supports women in construction but also upholds strong ethical values in every aspect of the business.

Any advice you would give to a young woman considering a career in construction?

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned, especially from my time as a claims adjuster, is the importance of confidence in your expertise. In this industry, you must earn trust by showing that you know your job, are qualified to make decisions, and, when needed, aren’t afraid to seek expert input. My advice is:

  • Be confident in your knowledge and skills. People will respect you when you demonstrate expertise and professionalism.
  • Learn as much as you can. Whether it’s technical knowledge, leadership skills, or industry trends, continuous learning will set you apart.
  • Surround yourself with a strong network. Finding mentors, industry peers, and supportive colleagues will help you grow and navigate challenges.
  • Stay true to your values. Integrity and ethical decision-making will always take you further in the long run.
