Meet Lori Graham

As a woman-owned company, SB Thomas & Associates is committed to empowering women in the construction industry. Women in Construction (WIC) Week gives us the perfect opportunity to highlight the remarkable women on our team. Today, we’re featuring Lori Graham, our TCI III and Office Manger, who brings expertise, leadership, and hands-on experience to the field. Learn how Lori is making an impact in an industry where women continue to break new ground.

How did you get started in a career in construction?

After graduating high school, I moved to Florida where I attended Bay Area Academy of Business and earned my certification as a paralegal.  This was mid 80’s when you still had to wear proper attire (suits and dresses) to work.  After a year of the business life, I was contemplating a career move. By accident I crossed paths with the construction industry. The gentleman that I worked under taught me everything from grade checking with a manual line level and tape measure to operating several pieces of equipment, I was hooked.  Blue jeans and outdoor life, I was in heaven. Life then was not easy for a girl in a man’s world. The men would often let you know you took the position from one of their kin.  That was 40 years ago and I wouldn’t change a thing. Every year I learn more till I finally reached the goal I had set for myself as a construction inspector.  And today I am very happy  with a consulting firm that truly understands women in construction.

What is your role with SB Thomas?

I am proud to be an employee with SB Thomas. I am a TCI III and Office Manager.

What do you like about working for SB Thomas (a woman-owned and operated company)?

Hands down it is because I have seen how the “S” in SB Thomas operates.  Sheree is top notch, never have I seen her back down from what is right.  She has taught me to be stronger and more confident than I would have ever been under other firms I have worked for. Sheree has strong principals and expects nothing short of that in her employees, this is why she has been so successful.

Any advice you would give to a young woman considering a career in construction?

This is not an easy life. The hours are long, and the summers fly by. Having come from no engineering experience this career choice has been so rewarding. The continuing education is gratifying knowing you can do this work if you just apply yourself. I wouldn’t trade it for any other.

Empowering the Future
